Belgian Malinois Characteristics
The Belgian Malinois is a highly intelligent breed with an intense working drive and eagerness to please. Historically bred to be herding dogs, the Malinois often displays herding-type behaviours, such as heel nipping, circling and chasing, which may be undesirable to many households. They are an obedient breed but their dominant personality requires a handler who is firm and consistent in setting and maintaining ground rules. Their protective instincts and inherent loyalty to their family requires socialization with people and other animals from a young age.
The Malinois is an energetic breed which requires adequate exercise, or they can become destructive and aggressive. They are a suitable breed for off-leash walks in safe areas. Due to their demanding needs for training, socialization and exercise, it is recommended that the Malinois be handled by experienced dog owners.
Belgian Malinois Major Health Concerns
Though a hardy and healthy breed, the Belgian Malinois is prone to some minor health conditions, including skin allergies, as well as hip and elbow dysplasia.
