Cocker Spaniel Characteristics
The Cocker Spaniel is eager to both work and hunt. They are trusting and respectful of their master. They love everyone and want people to be happy. If not socialised well, they may tend to be shy.
Cocker Spaniels are known for their sound, cheery temperament. They are great with children, elders, and other pets. They love to be close to their family but due to their hunting nature, will chase birds or other small animals when given the chance.
Cocker Spaniels tend to be barkers, so early training is required. They are easily trainable, though, excelling in obedience and agility competitions. They could be difficult to housetrain. Cocker Spaniels also make great therapy dogs. Harsh training methods do not work on them as they have a soft personality – they could become fearful if this type of training is used.
Cocker Spaniel Inherited Disease and Traits Testing Panels
We can offer the below tests for the Cocker Spaniel singularly or as packages or as included in the most comprehensive Panel “DogCheck 4.0”:
- Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) which is is a devastating degenerative disease of the spinal cord that can progress rapidly and cause weakness in the hind limbs and eventually paraplegia among genotypically affected dogs.
- Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), dogs begin to exhibit leg weakness followed by a complete collapse after just 5 to 15 minutes of strenuous activity.
- Hyperuricosuria, or elevated uric acid level in the urine, is inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder and is characterized by the formation of bladder stones and occasional kidney stones.
- PRA-prcd, which is inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. Degeneration of both rod and cone photoreceptor cells of the retina of PRA-prcd affected dogs usually occurs 3 to 5 years of age or later.

If they are all included in the most comprehensive test called “DogCheck 4.0“, the turnaround is 3-4 weeks from receipts of the samples to the laboratory. Please refer to the list below to see all the genes tested in this case.
NOTE: There is an extra cost of £45 to test the genes mentioned on the table as *xP as they are not included in the Dog Check 4.0 Report unless the extra fee has been paid at the checkout.
