Airedale Terrier Characteristics
The Airedale Terrier is hardworking and loyal, as well as intelligent and fun. As with most terriers, they are energetic and have a big heart. Airedale Terriers were bred to catch rats and otters and eventually became working dogs during the First World War. They are sporting and working dogs, which excel in obedience, agility and hunting tests. Airedale Terriers are happiest when they have a job, even if that job is simply entertaining children.
Airedale Terriers also have an independent streak. They are exceptionally intelligent and like to think for themselves. They are also known to hold grudges if mistreated and due to their natural prey drive, they can be aggressive towards other dogs and animals. They generally will not back down from a fight, and will need early socialization to manage their dominant temperament.
They are also excellent watch dogs. Airedales are protective of their family and distant towards strangers. However, they are friendly to guests in the home. Because they are terriers, Airedales love to dig, chase, and bark. It requires a lot of exercise and a safe yard. If you keep your Airedale Terrier in a fenced area, be aware that it will likely try to tunnel.
