Australian Cattle Characteristics
Originally bred in Australia to herd cattle, the Australian Cattle Dog is also known as a Blue or Red Heeler, because their short coat is either blue or red merle and because they move cattle by nipping at their feet.
Blue Heelers are intelligent, loyal, and protective dogs.
They are generally friendly and make great, hard-working companions.
While the breed is a perfect companion for an adventurous active person, it is often too energetic and strong-willed for young children or the elderly unless the dog is well trained.
Australian Cattle Dogs need early and consistent socialization to help them get along also with other pets at home.
They are distrustful of strangers as protecting their owner and their territory. For this reason, Australian Cattle Dogs are often used as guard dogs.
This breed is a high-energy, very trainable dog that enjoys both physical and mental challenges.
