Coton de Tulear Characteristics
The Coton de Tulear is a sweet, lovable, and incredibly affectionate breed that has led to its popularity as a family pet in North American homes. They are a gentle, sociable breed that do well with children and other animals and are very eager to please.
Coton de Tulears are considered a companion breed and are comfortable being around their family members at all times, which is why they are aptly known as “velcro dogs.” They love the company of their family members and do not like to be left alone and can develop destructive habits if left alone for too much time. They are best suited for families who are often at home, such as retirees and empty nesters.
Knowing that they enjoy the company of others and welcome strangers, the Coton de Tulear, as you would expect, does not serve as a guard dog. That said, they have an independent side and tend to be brave and fearless.
They require basic obedience training and proper socialization from a young age.
