Coton de Tulear Characteristics
The Coton de Tulear is a sweet, loveable, and incredibly affectionate breed which has led to its increase in popularity as a family pet in North American households. They are a gentle and sociable breed that do well with children and other animals and are very eager to please.
The Coton de Tulear are considered a companion breed and take comfort in being near their family members at all times – this is why they are aptly known as “Velcro dogs”. They love the company of their family members and they are not keen on being left alone. They may develop destructive habits if they are left for too long. They are most suitable for families who are often home, such as retirees, and empty nesters.
Since they enjoy the company of others and welcome strangers, the Coton de Tulear unsurprisingly makes a poor guard dog. With that said, they have an independent side to them and tend to be bold and fearless.
They require basic obedience training and proper socialisation from a young age.
Coton de Tulear Major Health Concerns
The Coton de Tulear is an overall healthy breed, however they are prone to Patellar Luxation, Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
