Vizsla Characteristics
Originating in Hungary as a hunting dog, the Vizsla belongs to the Pointer family. Despite their strong instincts to track prey and protect their family, the Vizsla makes a wonderful family pet. They are known for their loyalty and deep attachment to their family, earning them the label “Velcro dog”. However, while they display strong affection for their human family, they are best suited to homes which do not have cats or other small animals.
The Vizsla has a high energy level and is exceptionally happy when given a job to do. Their incredible scenting skills have made them popular drug-detection and search-and-rescue jobs. However, when kept as a family pet, the Vizsla is happy to simply learn basic obedience training, and agility, as well as play retrieval games such as flyball.
Exercise is especially important for the Viszla, and they require at least 60 minutes of it daily. This breed will gladly accompany you on a daily long walk or jog, and benefits from more mentally and physically stimulating dog sports.
Vizsla Major Health Concerns
While the Vizsla is overall a healthy breed, they are prone to certain health conditions such as epilepsy, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
Vizsla Interesting Facts
The Vizsla’s large-to-medium size, coat color and muscular build often causes them to be mistaken for other breeds, including the Weimaraner, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Rhodesian Ridgeback.
