West Highland White Terrier Characteristics
The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie, is self-sufficient and has high self-esteem. They are alert, brave and love companionship. Westies were originally bred for hunting. This is where they learned to think on their own, a trait they still have to this day. Their instinct to work can be channelled into agility or obedience training, a therapy dog, or even a search and rescue dog.
Although they are sometimes known to be a “big dog in a small body”, the Westie is not temperamental, aggressive or stubborn, they simply like to know what’s in it for them. The West Highland White Terrier is above all a companion.
They get along well with everyone: strangers, other dogs, children, even cats. However, they may chase other animals, but it is usually for fun.
Westies love life and have a great personality. They learn quickly, so training them is very easy. Their desire to be clean makes housetraining very easy. However, they do like to bark, especially if they hear or see something suspicious. They also like to dig, but with proper training you can get them to stop that habit.
West Highland White Terriers are loyal and affectionate, but they are still more self-confident and independent, so they are not affectionate dogs. They are generally calm inside the house, but they love to run and play when they go outside.
